Arrigo Sacchi believes that Paolo Maldini was a victim of the new ‘American mentality’ at AC Milan which promotes ‘ruthlessness in business’.Interviewed by La Nazione, the former Milan boss Arrigo Sacchi, spoke about the ex-captain’s farewell to the Rossoneri, with his comments relayed by Calciomercato.com.

If he were to join Italy, he would be taking the role of Gianluca Vialli, who recently sadly passed away.

If he were to go to PSG, he wants assurances that he will have distance in his role from Luis Campos and is able to construct the team based on his own ideas.

On the circumstances of the interview:
I decided to give notice after 6 months, because time allows to stay calm. There are people, who join Milan without respect for their identity and history. There are also people associated with the club's ideas. Such a person's love for Milan remains unconditional and it would be better to keep such people close.

On Cardinale:
It is not easy to communicate with an American fund or a South African CEO [Gazidis, editor's note].
My contract extension? Everything was sorted out on June 30, 2022 at 10 p.m. It wouldn't be appropriate to say goodbye to us after winning the Scudetto.
When I had my first conversation with Cardinale, he told me, that we had to trust each other. So I did. We know, how it ended. To my knowledge, the decision to dismiss us was made several months earlier. Some people already knew about it.
Cardinale wanted us to win the Champions League. I told Cardinale, that such an endeavor would require a 3-year plan. Together with Massara and a friendly consultant, we have prepared an action plan. It contained 35 pages on sustainable strategy and the need for a qualitative leap. The plan was sent to Cardinale, his 2 closest associates and CEO Furlani. We never actually receive a feedback.
During the year, we had maybe one face-to-face conversation and exchanged about 4 messages.

On the circumstances of dismissal:
When someone sells the club for 1,2 billion euros and the new owners want to make changes, they have every right to do so. In my opinion, certain people and roles should be respected. I had to work out an agreement regarding my image rights. My love for Milan remains unconditional.
Cardinale told us, that Massara and I had been fired, justifying the decision, among other things: bad relations with Furlani and joking, that we were eliminated in the Champions League semifinals by Inter.

On mercato:
It is not true, that me, Massara and the management board didn't have common goals and plans. I never wanted to have a free hand in signing players, even those on loan. Each transfer was approved by the CEO and owners. We selected the players together.
Of the 35 signings, De Ketelaere was a challenge for us. He was probably 21 years old then. When you go for such young players, the failure rate is very high at a club like Milan. Such players need to be helped and supported somehow, no time to wait for the action. Sometimes, you have to send someone out on loan and then you have to take them back.
I remember, when Elliott owned the club and I worked with Boban and Massara. It was about 3 months after we started working together. We were called to London. Initially, the owners weren't convinced about players such as Leao, Bennacer and Theo. They had their reasons for this. However, starting a certain project required taking some risks, which in some cases paid off.
Budget for mercato 2023/2024? As of March 2023, it hasn't been discussed yet. We didn't want to wait until June.
Four days before our release, Furlani told us, that the budget would not be too large, not to say too low initially. I took note of this. After we left, the mercato budget was doubled. It was also influenced by Tonali's transfer. The salary amount has reached the expected level.
Algorithm? You don't need an algorithm to sign players, like Loftus-Cheek, Pulisić or Chukwueze. You can't compare the last 4 transfer markets with the last one. We had completely different options back then.

On Tonali:
When he was about to join us, we had lively discussions with the CEO and owners of the club. Scouting at that time, wasn't in favor of this transfer.
I have never been against big sales, but in my opinion, there was no need for Tonali to leave us. I think, that we would do everything possible to keep him with us.

On working in Milan:
In the 2018/2019 season, we were a not very young team, that achieved poor results. We hadn't played in the Champions League for 6 years. That squad was worth maybe 200 million euros with salaries of 150 million euros. Within 4 years, the team was restructured: the team was rejuvenated, net mercato expenses amounted to 120 million euros. Over time, the value of the team reached 500 million euros. Salaries dropped to 120 million euros, and then to 100 million euros, where the contract extension for Kessie and Calhanoglu was finally abandoned.
After the end of last season, the balance was as follows: 3 seasons in a row in the Champions League, Scudetto after 11 years, a semi-final of the Champions League after 16 years and a positive balance after 17 years. However, when you are on the edge, one unsuccessful season is enough to ruin your work so far.

On Scaroni:
He was one of the first in the row, when we won the Scudetto. When things weren't going our way on the pitch, I often saw him, how he left the match before the final . Perhaps, he wanted to avoid traffic on the way home or avoid uncomfortable questions. I don't know.
Scaroni said, that the working group is more united without me? Milan deserve a president, who cares about the interests of the club, managers and doesn't leave the team in need. He never asked the team or the players if they needed anything.
I have a different concept of group management and its functioning. I can say the same about Gazidis and Furlani.

On satisfaction:
When the salaries of some employees are reduced, as in the case of Boban or Massara, by up to 30%, you renew the team, increase its value, for example thanks to the Scudetto and play in the Champions League for 3 years in a row after so many years of absence, such work is stimulating and gives satisfaction. I can even go as far as to say, that it was a bigger success for me, than winning the 7th Champions League.

On Pioli:
We have to be grateful to him for what he did for the club. Giving him tasks, that are beyond him, will make him feel more alone in the club.
Did I want to fire him and sign Pirlo? My role in the club at that time was based on frequent discussions. In my opinion, Pioli deserved to extend his contract until 2025 at that time. If there was a match between the club's intentions and goals, I don't see, why anything would change.

On future:
My options are limited. I am not going to work for another Italian club. I could consider the option of working for a high-level club abroad.
Saudi Arabia? Who knows... Maybe it would be a good idea...
Did your (Milan) legacy end on June 5?
I don't know. I was associated with the club for 36 years. It is too strong a bond, that will stay with me forever. History cannot be erased. I am grateful for my life and for Milan. We are in a new era, the era of Berlusconi 2.0. Before I left the club, I said:
"...You are in charge now, but please, respect Milan's history..."
